The Permanent Mission of Denmark to the United Nations in New York (the Danish UN Mission) is seeking to recruit two policy advisors..
The Danish UN Mission represents Denmark at UN Headquarters in New York. We cover all aspects of the UN from foreign and security policy to human rights and implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals.
We are looking for candidates with a strong interest in the UN, global affairs and Danish foreign policy. As a policy advisor at the Danish UN Mission, your job will be to promote Danish interests, engage in multilateral diplomacy as well as analyse and report to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Copenhagen on key developments in the UN and in global multilateral cooperation in general.
The Danish UN Mission is organised in small, dynamic teams dealing with the different aspects of the agenda of the UN. We represent Denmark in the UN General Assembly and a range of other bodies and processes in New York. We work to ensure that Danish priorities and interests are reflected in the decisions that are taken. Denmark and its partners are also actively engaged in reforming and fostering greater effectiveness in the UN’s efforts to address global challenges and to advance multilateral solutions and the values on which the UN is built.
The specific profiles of the vacant positions are not yet finally determined and will i.a. depend on the final team compositions, including the selected candidates. Denmark has a strong focus on the fields of climate and sustainable development, human rights and peace and security UN relevant experience in these areas will be an important asset, but candidates should be prepared to take on a wide range of tasks related to the UN agenda and Denmark’s foreign policy.
Main tasks and responsibilities as policy advisor
Covering relevant General Assembly work - including participating in meetings of relevant subsidiary committees etc. – related to Danish priority areas at the UN, particularly in the fields of sustainable development (2nd Committee) and human rights (3rd Committee).
Preparing multilateral negotiations at the UN, including coordination of positions and strategies in the EU and with other partners, and representing Denmark in these processes.
Liaising with relevant parts of the Danish Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Copenhagen and the Danish Government regarding intergovernmental processes, negotiations and events at the UN.
Analysing and reporting to the Danish Ministry of Foreign Affairs on outcomes and trends in the work of the UN in New York.
Contributing to the external communication effort of the Danish UN Mission through social media and other channels.
Contributing to the preparation of high-level Danish visits to New York and events organized by Denmark, including also practical/logistical aspects.
Master’s degree or equivalent.
Relevant experience with multilateral cooperation, the UN and Danish foreign policy,
preferably in fields related to sustainable development and/or human rights.
Analytical skills as well as strong written and oral communication competencies.
Negotiation abilities as well as aptitude for collaboration, networking and fostering common
solutions with colleagues and external partners.
Ability to work independently, results-oriented and in a prioritized manner, including
managing multiple tasks and working under time pressure.
An open-minded and flexible attitude towards handling of assignments and readiness to
take on new challenges.
Command of Danish.
You will be offered full-time employment for two years with the possibility of extension on a local contract.
You will be employed with a working week of – on average – 37 hours, including a 30 minutes daily lunch break, but you are employed without an upper limit on working hours. This implies that you must work more than 37 hours a week if your work so requires without receiving compensation for overtime. However, you do have some flexibility to organize your daily working hours. You must expect longer working hours during peak periods.
You are entitled to 5 weeks (25 working days) of paid vacation days per year.

As part of your salary you will be covered by a workplace pension scheme.
You will be offered reasonable coverage of sickness expenses. So will your
spouse/partner/children under the age of 26 if you provide for him/her/them.
