It has long been one of the mainstays of the Danish social calendar in New York and Connecticut. Attracting both performance sailors and the more occasional racers, the Denmark Race remains one of the largest day races on the Long Island Sound.
The fun is both on the water and off, with two race parties: a dinner the night before, and cocktails, Danish beer and snacks on the Stamford Yacht Club lawn where sailors, friends and family gather for the Reggae Lawn Party after the race, in connection with the awards ceremony.
The festivities kick off Saturday evening with the traditional Denmark Race Dinner, see invitation here. The price is $100 per person (please bring cash, check made out to Stamford Yacht Club or your credit card), which includes dinner, beverages, tax and tips. To register please contact Ove Haxthausen. For each participant, please indicate main course preference: pork tenderloin, chicken, branzino or vegetarian.
The Denmark Race is all about racing, friendship, fun, local camaraderie, and sportsmanship. The race begins Sunday morning, and again this year, there will also be a ‘race within the race’ - a Corporate Challenge; Six Danish companies will race each other in an Ideal 18 one design boats with a 3-person crew [a skilled sailor will be matched with novice crews]. This 'race within the race' allows local Danish (or Denmark-related) companies to get marketing exposure plus participate and have fun on the water. Contact daccny@daccny.com for further information.
After the race, sailors, friends and family gather at Stamford Yacht Club for the Reggae Lawn Party while race results are being tabulated. The Awards Ceremony marks the end of a busy weekend.
The organizers, the Denmark Race Committee at the Stamford Yacht Club — with the support of Corporate Member Battea, the Royal Danish Yacht Club (KDY), Ole & Steen and Carlsberg, and the Danish-American Chamber of Commerce — expect a big line-up of starting boats when the first gun goes off at 10:20 a.m. on Sunday, September 10. So, register now!
